Age condition (finally) available!

Great news: We've finally released the "age" condition that a lot of you guys have been waiting for since we launched!

Now you can create rules targeting emails that have already arrived, making it easier than ever to keep your inbox under control. We think  Need help with clutter? Simply make a rule that archives emails after a few hours days old. Can't keep track of important tasks? Try applying a special label to emails you haven't read or responded to after a few days. The possibilities are plentiful, especially when you combine this new condition with others. We'll be sure to put up some example rules soon.

This new feature is definitely "beta", so if you run into any bugs or unexpected behavior, let us know and we'll take care of it ASAP.

Now your rules can target all incoming emails

Hey everyone,

As you may have realized by now, the rules you create with Syphir aren't applied to your emails until a few seconds after arrival, whereas the filters you create with Gmail take effect instantly. This results in behavior that can be very cool at times, and very confusing at other times. For example:

By default, your rules only target emails found in the Inbox. Let's say you setup a Gmail filter to automatically archive emails from Fred. If you setup a rule in Syphir to alert your iPhone of all emails from Fred, you'll run into a problem -- your rule will never see these emails, because Gmail archives them first!

To remedy the situation, I added a condition called "coverage" last week, which allows you to choose what labels you want your rules to apply to. And today I've made a very simple addition: you can now choose "All Incoming Mail" for the coverage condition. This should really come in handy if you want your rules to target all emails, regardless of label. (Thanks to Jonathan Gale for making it obvious that we needed this option!)

Next up: The elusive "age" condition...

Merlin Mann Reviews Syphir

Last week on MacBreak Weekly, Merlin Mann chose Syphir as his pick of the week. He said some very flattering things about us, which is super cool -- we definitely wouldn't be doing what we're doing if not for Merlin's Inbox Zero movement. Here's the video:

Sneak Preview

We've got a lot of stuff in the works right now. Instead of keeping it all to ourselves, I thought I'd post a few intentionally-revealing screenshots. Here's a sneak preview of just a few new features and UI updates you can expect to see soon.

Clever Quiet Hours with SmartPush

Last night I was up late coding when I decided to put a pizza in the oven. As I so often do when I'm tired, I convinced myself I could take a short nap on the couch, and wake up just in time. No alarm clock necessary. An hour later I awoke to the sound of a familiar "ding", and a push notification from my roommate that said "Court, I think you have something burning".

If I learned one thing from this, it's that I should put more faith in alarm clocks. And oven timers. But if I learned two things, it's that I'm probably the only person who doesn't mind being woken up to the sound of a new email.

An increasing number of email push apps have a "quiet hours" feature for exactly this reason. And unfortunately, as more than a few SmartPush users have reminded us, ours doesn't. If you're a SmartPush user and you really want quiet hours, you can look forward to a future update. But if you really really REALLY want quiet hours, you can make clever use of the Rules system to get them right now:

  1. Sign in to Syphir Rules at https://www.syphir.com/signin, then click "Create New Rule".
  2. Make a rule with whatever conditions and actions you want. (make sure one of the actions sends the email to SmartPush)
  3. Now go back to the conditions, and add the "Time of Arrival" condition, setting whatever hours you want.

Emails that don't fall within your specified time range won't be pushed to your phone. It's sort of an anti-quiet hours... a "loud hours" if you will. Good luck!

OAuth Support

Ever since we launched Rules into private beta and submitted SmartPush to the App Store, the number one concern we've heard from users has been about security. People aren't comfortable sharing their passwords with third-party services, and we don't blame them!

So we're very excited to announce that all of our applications now make use of Google's new OAuth IMAP protocol!

In English, this means you can use Syphir products without having to share your Gmail password. (For more details, check out our security page). This is a big win for everybody, as people can finally start building and using applications on top of Gmail that are truly secure.

So go ahead and give SmartPush and Rules a try, and let us know what you think!

SmartPush @ Apple App Store

We are happy to let everyone know that we now have our SmartPush app available in the App store. Feel free to take it for a spin here.

We are already hard at work on an update that will dramatically improve the UI and the security. We promise to have the upgrade available soon.

Reducing Noise in the Universe

Today I gave my PhD defense at MIT, and can be officially called "Doc" (in addition to my main title at Syphir of "Chief Bug Reporter"). My work is mainly related to reducing the noise in molecular simulations. If you are so inclined, you can look at my slides here and a draft of the work here.

I look forward to helping people reduce the noise in their mailboxes :)

Security

Last week we introduced an important link to the footer of every page on the site: Security.

When we were first discussing Syphir, before we'd written a single line of code, we knew that security would be a big deal. We have very strong opinions about the way data is used online.

Today, users trust the creators of their favorite web apps to be responsible when it comes to security. That trust is betrayed far too often. Not only should companies be obligated to protect their customers' information, but they have a responsibility to make it clear how this information is being used.

Our new security page is an important step in the right direction. In clear, specific, and easily-readable language, it details our policies on data use and the measures we take to protect our users. We'll continue to improve and update this page, so check back every so often.
